Directions to Cape Maclear

By Car

By private car Cape Maclear is 4 hours from Lilongwe and Blantyre. Or if you are coming from Monkey Bay, its just a 30 minute drive.

From either Lilongwe or Blantyre side:

  • Take the Road to Monkey Bay, there are signs along the way.
  • 5Km before Monkey Bay there is a turnoff to the left with a sign for Cape Maclear. That road is closed.
  • Drive 2Km past it and you will find a turn left. No sign.
  • Take the road, which ends at a t-junction. Turn left and just follow the road until you get another t-junction, turn left again.
  • Follow until you get to a cross road. Turn right and follow the road, it becomes tar after a while.
  • Follow the road until it ends at the National Park gates and turn right onto the gravel road.
  • After 1km you will find a white building on the left hand side, this is Thumbi View Lodge.

Organized Transfers

To make things easy for you we offer private transfers from the airport to our lodges in Cape Maclear and Mabuya Camp in Lilongwe. Also inbetween our partner lodges you can enjoy our transfer services.

By Bus

The Axa bus leaves daily bus from Lilongwe and Blantyre to Monkey Bay. Estimated cost is around 10$ depending on the exchange rate. Please note that the journey by bus takes longer than by private car (6 hours plus). From Monkey Bay you will find:

  • Small motorcycles (Around 2000Mkw (3$)
  • Minibus taxis (Around 2000Mkw (3$)
  • Private rented vehicle (Around 20000Mkw (25$)
